Dental Veneers:
Questions & Answers
What is a dental veneer?
Dental veneers are very thin covers that are placed on the front surfaces of your teeth, instantly erasing the following issues:
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Teeth containing surface bulges and craters
- Deep stains that can’t be removed with teeth whitening
- Teeth that appear too small compared to other teeth or compared to the gum tissue
Veneers are made from attractive, tooth-colored material such as porcelain or composite resin. They’re designed to look completely natural — it’s a fast and easy way to get a gorgeous new smile.
How are veneers attached?
Veneers typically take just two visits to apply. At your first visit, a small amount of tooth surface is removed to make room so your restoration won’t stick out. Then Dr. Poupore will make an impression of the tooth and send it to our dental lab where the veneers will be custom-made just for you.
Dr. Poupore will place a temporary restoration over your teeth to protect them while you’re waiting for your new veneers.
During your second visit, the temporary restoration is removed and the tooth is carefully cleaned. Now you’re ready for Dr. Poupore to attach your veneers using strong dental adhesive. Finally, he’ll buff and trim your veneers for a perfect fit and a beautiful smile.
Do veneers require special care?
Veneers can be cared for like natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing and routine dental checkups to make sure they stay in good shape and remain properly attached.
It’s also important to avoid biting down on hard foods or substances like ice or hard candy because this can cause chipping of the veneer or the underlying tooth.
Unlike your natural teeth, a veneer cannot be whitened, and although the veneer material is very resistant to stains, rinsing well after consuming foods or beverages that can cause discoloration will help ensure the veneers continue to look their best.
It’s also a good idea to have your veneers applied after we’ve completed a teeth whitening treatment so the veneers match your teeth when they look their best.
How long will my dental veneers last?
With proper care, veneers can last up to 10 or years or longer.
